Skerries News
Lucky escape as fire hits iconic Man O’WarOn Saturday, April 11, mid morning, Skerries News got a call to say the Man O’War pub was on fire. It seemed inconceivable. The iconic pub has been around for over 400 years. We all remember the horrific fire of Keane’s Bus Bar in 2023 and the devastation it caused, it seemed unbelievable that such a thing could happen again. At the scene were four fire engines, a fire brigade water tanker, garda cars, and the junction was blocked to all traffic. Luckily, the blaze was clearly being contained already. The smoke had dissipated and a turntable ladder truck had firemen and hoses poised over the burnt-out area near the chimney as firemen were busy removing tons of thatch. They had obviously been there for quite a while and numerous hoses were spread across the road as tons and tons of water had been poured into the building. The following day saw the quite amazing announcement that the historic gastro pub was already open again despite much of the thatch on one part of the building being gone and a temporary tarpaulin in place. The water and all been cleared out and inside, it was business as usual. Every table in the restaurant was full and there were even customers eating on the terrace, though it was quite chilly outside. Skerries News were told there was a good half hour wait for tables, so we went to the pub side to wait where there were a few seats at the bar. Man O’War is owned by Rob and Erica Masterson. The couple only bought the pub in 2021 though Erica’s dad is from Man O’War and her grandfather was born in the house across the road from the pub, so Erica has known it all her life. When they heard it was for sale they jumped at the chance. Rob is usually behind the bar and Erica does the behind the scenes work- accounts, payroll, marketing etc - whilst also raising their four children. It’s very much family run and their kids are in and out often too.On Sunday, Rob was buzzing around as usual chatting to everyone as he was working and Erica was due to arrive soon. We finally caught up with Rob when he spotted us at the bar. He was in great form and clearly delighted to be back in business as he took the time to answer a few questions from us.
