€3 TAP TO HELP A YOUNG PERSONA NEW funding initiative has just been launched for Skerries Youth Support Services (SYSS). It is a huge poster on the wall of Skerries Community Centre with an integrated card machine. The committee is hoping that people passing will tap their phone or credit card to support the charity and each tap costs just €3. SYSS has been running for 11 years now and is completely funded by our community. It is a charity set up to supply free counselling to young people in need - early intervention to help young people when they need it most without having to wait for months and months. Originally the service was just one day a week, but the demand is so great there are now four full days of counselling every week. The wait time is now down to just seven weeks. The cost last year was €70,000 but since it has just been extended to four days it is expected to be more this year.
