Seán and Family Celebrate Hard-Won Three-Wheeler. 'Lion of Fingal' Thanked as Cyclists Gather to Launch TrikeThree years ago a fundraising account was set up to raise money for a trike for Seán Byrne. He was 16 at the time.Seán has a rare genetic disorder, FARS 2 which among many things causes spastic diplegia. Seán has been a full time wheelchair user since the age of 11. Seán's younger sister, Ciara, has the same condition as Seán. She is also a full time wheelchair user.Seán and his father Barry have always been keen cyclists and the fund was set up by their friends and fellow cyclists in the "Saturday Morning Training Group". It was intended that all funds raised would go to the purchase of a specialised titanium tricycle and ongoing expenses for both Seán and Ciara.Skerries cyclist Paul Deans was a key supporter and organiser of the fundraising effort but after Paul’s sudden death in May 2023 everything was put on hold for a while.At the launch Barry gave a speech saying, “From myself and Seán, a big thank you to everyone here today and to everyone behind the drive to get Seán’s trike. This goes back a long way between the fundraising and the sponsorship and people doing that cycle in 2021 on the back end of Covid. There were over 200 people there that day but I’m not going to name everyone. “The process of getting the trike was a long old process with a few speed wobbles on the way. Sean put it on the back burner because he did his Leaving Cert this year and he’s in college now. We were looking all around Europe for this bike but we actually got it from a company in Lusk, though it’s made in Germany.
