Major upgrade of Skerries pitches has begun....WORK has officially begun on a significant €1.3 million redevelopment of sports pitches and community amenities at Skerries Town Park, marking a major investment in the town’s sporting and recreational future. For much of the winter the three pitches have been closed due to flooding issues and matches have been regularly cancelled, disappointing young players all over Skerries, for weeks at a time. The project, led by Fingal County Council, promises not only improved playing surfaces for local clubs but also new pathways, enhanced accessibility, biodiversity, and overall park experience for the wider community. The commencement of works was marked by a sod-turning ceremony attended by Mayor Tom O’Leary, local community representatives, and members of key sports organisations including Skerries Harps GAA Club, Skerries Town FC, and Skerries Athletics Club on Thursday, April 16. Also present was Senior Parks and Landscape Officer Kevin Halpenny. At the heart of the redevelopment is a comprehensive upgrade of the park’s three GAA and soccer pitches. The works will include the installation of advanced drainage systems designed to significantly improve pitch durability and usability throughout the years.Kevin Halpenny told Skerries News, “Our main issue was ensuring that improving the drainage didn’t cause an unintended consequence in terms of the adjoining houses and roads etc.”“Basically it’s three pitches on three different levels and the hydrology is quite complex. It’s affected by the tidal effects underneath the land so we had to take account of all of those issues.”“That involves, raising the levels of certain areas of the parks but crucially, putting in SuDs. They are a series of ponds and things called swales or ‘swayers’. These are shallow ditches designed to convey, store and allow water to infiltrate the ground. They are really good for biodiversity, and that's an additional benefit of the project here.”.....READ FULL ARTICLE IN THE CURRENT EDITIONskerriesnews.ie/product/may1st26/A huge thankyou to everyone who subscribes.
