Have you been to the new library yet?The historic Skerries Carnegie Library has officially reopened following a major €8.9 million restoration and redevelopment project, ushering in a new era for one of the town’s most cherished community buildings. The reopening on Thursday, January 29 was marked by a lively celebration attended by a large crowd of local residents, councillors, schoolchildren, librarians and members of the architectural team who helped bring the ambitious vision to life.Speaking to Skerries News, Head Librarian Nora Finnegan said the response from the community had been overwhelmingly positive. Ms Finnegan explained that the library now offers everything that was available in the temporary premises during the renovation period, and much more. In addition to traditional book collections, audiobooks, large print titles, newspapers and magazines, the library now hosts book clubs, local groups and a busy programme of talks and classes. Over the next six months, events will include local history lectures, health and wellbeing talks, media literacy workshops, advocacy sessions for older people and a special talk on the history of Skerries Library.“We were actually fully booked very quickly,” she said. “We have a lecture room, two smaller meeting rooms and a creative space where sewing machine classes and yoga sessions are already running. It really is for every age group. There’s something for everybody here.”She also noted how quickly the new study areas had become popular. “We opened the doors during that horrific storm earlier in the week, and it was amazing how many people still came in just to have a look around. Upstairs, the study space is already full of people working quietly. It’s a lovely place to sit and focus.”READ FULL ARTICLE IN THE CURRENT EDITIONskerriesnews.ie/product/february6th26/Never miss an issue, get an online subscription to Skerries News.
